Paphiopedilum Orchid Indoor Growing Care Guide

A general guide to growing Paphiopedilums. Learn how to care for lady slipper orchids below in our online guide.

  • Light

Paphiopedilum orchids thrive in medium-filtered light. They require about the same light as Phalaenopsis orchids, an east, west or north facing windows will be perfect for them.

When growing under artificial lights, place the lights about a foot or two above the plant.

  • Temperature

Paphiopedilum temperatures can vary depending on the hybrid, but in general, they're happy anywhere between 55F-72F nights and 70F-85F days.

  • Humidity

Humidity for this orchid should be moderate between 40-50%. Moving air is important so that fungus and other bacteria don't spread on the leaves.

  • Watering

This type of orchid does not have pseudobulbs like oncidiums. Thus they need more constant water. Water about 2x a week, make sure that the medium does not sit in water as that can lead to root rot. Let it slightly dry but keep the substrate moist.

  • Fertilizing

One should fertilize on a regular basis year-round, Paphiopedilums can handle a 20-20-20 mix but to be on the safe side, some growers use a weaker strength mix like 10-10-10. Since these orchids grow on a more rainy environment, they have a constant flush so make sure that the salts from the fertilizers don't stay on the roots and flush monthly or quarterly.

  • Repotting

Repot Paphiopedilums every 2 years or as the medium decomposes. Most contain a mixture of medium grade bark, perlite and sphagnum moss. Be advised that there are certain types of paths that require more Lyme in their mix, ground oyster shells can help with this.
